A Lakshmipur court on Thursday (October 12) sentenced nine people to life imprisonment in Chandraganj Union Awami League vice president Umar Farooq murder case.
District and Sessions Judge Court Judge Rahibul Islam passed the order.
However, the court fined each convict to Tk 20,000 in default they have to spend one more year in prison.
Meanwhile, the court acquitted four accused in the case as charges were not proved. None of the accused was present in the court during the verdict, all of them are on the run.
The convicts are - Md. Miraj, 33, Son of Abu Taher of Mohammadpur village of Begumganj upazila of Noakhali district, son of Abdul Mannan of Quaria village of the same upazila, Alauddin alias Alo, 28, Md. Rahmat Ulya's son of Paschim Latifpur village of Chandraganj union of Laxmipur Sadar upazila Saiful Islam, 40, Delwar Hossain's son Milan alias Mila, 40, son of Abu Bakkar Siddiki Tuhin, 38, Kausar alias Choto Kausar, 30, son of late Bashir Ullah, Awal, 34, son of Abu Taher, Son of Golam Mustafa of Amani Lakshmipur village Zaker, 40, and Riaz alias Chita, 28, of Dhanyapur village.
The acquitted are – Sumon, 33, Sujon, 33, Milon, 33, and Sajeeb. Another accused Md. Raju died during the pendency of the case.
All the convicts are top terrorists of Chandraganj and members of Jisan Bahini who were killed in a gunfight with RAB.
District Judge Court Public Prosecutor (PP) Jasim Uddin confirmed the matter.
On August 31, 2015, on the day of the inauguration of the new building of Chandraganj Police Station, Omar Farooq gave a speech against terrorism. The members of Jisan forces then targeted him. On the morning of September 1, when Omar Farooq went to a shop next to his house, the terrorists shot him dead.
