The High Court (HC) has granted bail to former chief judicial magistrate of Cumilla Sohel Rana three hours after it sentenced him to one month's jail over contempt of court today (Oct 12).

The HC bench of Justice Md Badruzzaman and Justice S M Masud Hossain Dolon passed the order following a bail petition filed by Sohel Rana.

According to the bail petition, Sohel said he will move an appeal before the Appellate Division against the HC verdict that sentenced him to one month's simple imprisonment for contempt of court.

Earlier, the HC fined Sohel Rana Tk 5,000 and ordered him to surrender before Dhaka's Chief Judicial Magistrate Court within seven days for contempt of court.

Sohel Rana is currently attached to the Ministry of Law as Additional District Judge. 

Sohel Rana has submitted an explanation regarding the disregard of the top court's order in a case. However, the HC was not satisfied with the explanation.
