DHAKA: Opposition BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia on Tuesday called ‘March for Democracy’ to Dhaka for December 29 to accelerate the ongoing anti-to press home their demand.
“I am calling upon the people from all walks of life to march to Dhaka. The march ‘March for Democracy’ will be to say ‘no’ to farcical elections and ‘yes’ to democracy,” she said.
The Leader of the Opposition came up with the plea while addressing journalists at her Gulshan party office in the evening.
She called upon the people from all walks of life to march towards Dhaka carrying the national flag to press home their demands for holding a peaceful election under non-partisan government.
Khaleda Zia told the journalists: “The purpose of the march to Dhaka is to demand elections under the non-partisan neutral government and for the voting rights of the people.”
The former premier said the incumbent government is “illegal” and the people of the country are not compelled to abide by the directives of the government.
She also claimed that they placed proposal for consensus but the government did not agreed and the government is trying to grab power by holding one-party elections.
Khaleda also blamed the ruling Awami League for the current political deadlock saying the abolition of the caretaker government system is at the root of the crisis facing the whole nation.
“The Awami League will have to take all the responsibilities for the all untoward situation now taking place for the cancellation of the caretaker government,” she said.
Indicating the government officials and staff, she said, “You are not for the government rather you are for the people of the country.”
Khaleda told journalists that the government is responsible for creating anarchic situation as the ruling party activists involved in torching and vandalism.
She added: “The government is holding a farce election by depriving voting rights of people of the country and they snatched the rights of fundamental rights of holding rally.”
Addressing Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, she said, “There is still enough time to reach consensus. I urged the premier to forward for reaching consensus through talks.”
