DHAKA: The newly elected lawmakers are set to take oath on Thursday morning.
Parliament Speaker Shirin Sharmin Chowdhury will administer the oath at 10:00am.
As per the constitution, after taking oath by newly elected lawmakers, the new government must arrange the opening session of Jatiya Sangshad within 30 days. So, first session will start in this month.
As per the rule, parliament speaker has to be elected in the first session. Incumbent speaker will leave the post after her delivering welcome speech in the first session. Later, members of the parliament will elect new speaker unanimously.
After electing the speaker, the election will be held in reserved parliamentary seats. The parliament will send the list of reserved MPs to the Election Commission. The vote of Parliament members will elect the lawmakers in the reserved seats.
Earlier on Wednesday, the Election Commission (EC) secretariat published the gazette declaring the names of some 290 successful candidates out of 300 constituencies in the country.
As per the constitution, it is mandatory for the EC to publish the gazette within three days of the elections.
In January 5 elections, Awami League secured 232 seats, Jatiya Party 33, Workers Party 6, JSD 5 and Jatiya Party (JP), Tariqat Federation and BNF secured one seat each while independent candidates won in 13 constituencies.
