A Dhaka court today (March 19) sentenced Hallmark Chairman Jasmine Islam, Managing Director Tanvir Mahmud and seven others to life imprisonment for their involvement in loan forgery from Sonali Bank and money embezzlement.

Judge Md Abul Kashem of the Special Judge Court-1 of Dhaka delivered the verdict.

The court also fined the couple Tk5 crore each and seven other convicts Tk10 lakh each.

Besides, eight other accused, including Sonali Bank’s former managing director Humayun Kabir, were also jailed in different terms in the case.

On January 28, after hearing the arguments of the case, the court fixed February 28 for announcing the judgment. Later, again on March 12, after the presentation of arguments by the ACC and the accused, March 19 was fixed for announcing the judgment.

The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) filed the case on 4 October 2012 on charges of embezzling about Tk525.63 crore through forgery from the bank with the connivance of the accused.
