In a span of seven days, onion prices in the wholesale market of Pabna have witnessed a sudden drop in price to Tk 40-45 per Kg.
According to Pabna’s local market, last week onion was sold at Tk 2,800 to 3,000 per maund, which is now at Tk 2,000.
In Pabna’s Boro Bazaar, onion traders are selling good quality and large size onion at Tk 2,000, whereas small size at Tk 1,500.
When asked in this regard businessman and farmers said the onions that are being traded in the market now are native seedlings or Hali onions planted earlier. Due to import of onion from India, the price of domestic onion has gone down.
However, the onion that is available in the market cannot be stored for a long time. Onions that can be stored will take another 15 to 20 days to ripen, they said.
Farmers are facing loss due to low price of onion. So they demanded to stop the import of onion from India and fix the price of local onion.
Ishaq Ali and Md. Shahidullah, a onions trader said, “Now no one is talking about onions in the market. When prices go up, everyone comes to the market to fine. And now the price has dropped, no one is looking for it.”
