The Ministry of Youth Sports (MoYS) and UNICEF Child Protection Section have joined forces in a swift and coordinated response to the devastating fire outbreak that occurred on March 24 at Karail Bede Slum in the capital.
Recognizing the urgent need to provide support to the affected children, adolescents, and the community at large, MoYS and UNICEF swiftly mobilized resources and began delivering aid on the ground. Within hours of the incident, recreational kits, sports materials, T-shirts, and warm cooked food were distributed to those impacted by the fire.
In addition to meeting immediate physical needs, special attention was given to the psychosocial well-being of the affected population, particularly adolescents and girls. Special sessions on Child Safeguarding were conducted, and a range of activities, including indoor games, drawing and painting, and storytelling sessions, were organized to provide much-needed psychosocial support during this emergency situation.
Both MoYS and UNICEF, including Elisa Calpona, PhD, Child Protection Manager, Monira Hasan, Child Protection Specialist from UNICEF, and Md. Rezaul Karim, District Sports Officer Dhaka from MoYS, were present at Karail to oversee and facilitate the emergency response efforts.
Speaking on behalf of the collaboration, Elisa Calpona stated, "In times of crisis, it is essential to prioritize the needs of children and adolescents, ensuring their safety, well-being, and emotional stability. Through this collaborative effort with MoYS, we aim to provide comprehensive support to the affected community and help them rebuild their lives."
Md. Rezaul Karim reiterated MoYS's commitment to continuing support until the situation is normalized, emphasizing the importance of sustained efforts in addressing the long-term needs of those affected by the fire.
Both MoYS and UNICEF remain steadfast in their commitment to providing ongoing assistance and support to the affected communities as they navigate through this challenging time.
