DHAKA: Former chief justice Habibur Rahman passed away on Saturday night.
He was 85.
Habibur Rahman was declared dead at 10:30pm when he was taken to United Hospital after he fell sick.
Hospital’s public relations officer Mostafizur Rahman confirmed the matter to banglanews.
Primary sources said the body of Justice Habibur Rahman will be kept at central Shaheed Minar at 10:00am Monday to pay last tribute by people from all walks of life.
His first Namaz-e-Janaza will be held there while second one at Supreme Court at noon and third one at Gulshan Azad Mosque in afternoon.
He was the chief adviser of the 1996 caretaker government which oversaw the Seventh parliamentary elections in Bangladesh.
President Abdul Hamid, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, Chief Justice Md Muzammel Hossain today expressed profound shock at the death of former Chief Justice and ex-chief adviser of the caretaker government Justice Muhammad Habibur Rahman.
In a condolence message, they recalled his outstanding contribution to the judiciary as well as to establish rule of law in the country and prayed for eternal peace of the departed soul and conveyed profound sympathy to the bereaved family.
Habibur Rahman began his career as a Lecturer in History of Dhaka University in 1952. Later he joined Rajshahi University where he subsequently held the office of Dean of the Faculty of Law (1961) and of Reader in History (1962-64).
He changed his profession in 1964 when he took to law and joined the Dhaka High Court Bar.
He is a Fellow of Bangla Academy and Asiatic Society of Bangladesh; Honorary Fellow of Worcester College, Oxford; and also Honorary Bencher of Honourable Society of Lincoln`s Inn, London.
