The court in Habiganj sentenced seven people to death and 10 others to life imprisonment for beating a senior citizen to death in 2003. 

Additional District and Sessions Judge-1 Court Judge Md. Azizul Haque handed down the verdict on Tuesday (April 30) afternoon.

Besides, the accused have been fined Tk 1 lakh each.

Habiganj District and Sessions Judge Additional Public Prosecutor Saleh Uddin Ahmed confirmed the matter.

He said of the convicts, one is absconding. 

On February 14, 2003, Harun Mia, a social judge and senior citizen of the area in Hurgaon village of Habiganj Sadar Upazila, was beaten to death by blocking the road due to a communal dispute.

Sumon Ahmed, the brother of Harun Mia, later filed a murder case in Habiganj Sadar Model Police Station against 47 people.
