A television journalist collapsed and died on duty while covering the Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (DUCSU) election on Tuesday.
The reporter, identified as 40-year-old Tariqul Shibli of Channel S, was rushed to Dhaka Medical College Hospital after falling ill but was pronounced dead at around 1:30pm.
According to fellow journalist Shafik Ahmed, Shibli had just finished a live broadcast outside Curzon Hall and was on his way to another assignment when he suddenly became unwell in his car.
“We took him straight to the hospital, but doctors told us he had already passed away,” Ahmed said.
Emergency doctors suggested he may have suffered a heart attack. The hospital’s police camp inspector, Md Faruk, confirmed the death.
Shibli’s passing cast a shadow over the day’s voting, which began at 8:00am across eight polling centres at Dhaka University.
