DMP bust 3 members of kidney trafficking ring

Three members of a ring were arrested by Dhaka police today (May 12) for allegedly luring poor people of Bangladesh promising job in India and sent them there for kidney transplants.

Recently a victim named Robin, whose kidney was transplanted, filed a case at Dhanmondi police station in the capital.

Following the case, police arrested Md. Raju Howladar (32), Shahed Uddin (22) and Md. Atahar Hossain Bappi (28) were arrested from Dhanmondi Ibn Sina Diagnostic Center area and Bagerhat on Saturday (May 11).

However, 10 to 12 unidentified people including Md Masum (27), Shaheen (35) and Sagar Mostafa (37) are still absconding.

Dr Kh Mahid Uddin, additional commissioner (crime and ops) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP), disclosed this information at a press briefing in the DMP media centre on Sunday.

He said Robin was taking tea with one of his friends at a tea stall in Mirpur-10 of the capital in April last year. During taking the tea, he was sharing his financial crisis to his friend. 

At the same time Mohammad Masum who was also taking tea there and hearing Robin’s sorrowful words. Later, Masum introduced himself as a businessman and offered him (Robin) of giving a job in India, he said.

The painful tragedy began when the sufferer, Robin, was taken to Delhi's Faridabad area after he agreed for job. 

Later he was persuaded to sell the kidney by various tricks. According to the contract, the circle promised to pay Robin Tk 6 lakhs and gave him Tk 3 lakhs.

However, Robin’s one kidney was surgically removed at Kidney and Specialised Hospital in Gujarat on March 4 this year, said the officer.

The DMP officer said Robin’s kidney was sold at Tk 50 lakh, but he was paid with only Tk three lakh.

He said that during the primary interrogation, the arrestees confessed that they sent 10 persons to India like Robin and their kidneys were surgically removed.

Five to six people are now in their pipelines to be removed kidneys, said the police officer.

The senior DMP police officer said that the racket members target poor people.
