Why Rohingya repartition halted, questions former FM

Former Minister of Foreign Affairs Dr. AK Abdul Momen said reasons behind the non-repatriation of the Rohingyas despite the agreement of both Bangladesh and Myanmar governments must be identified.

Momen also the President of the Standing Committee on the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said the persecuted Rohingya community is also eager to return to their homeland.

He made the remark on Wednesday (May 15) at Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban, during a courtesy meeting with a delegation led by Malaysian Advisory Group Chairman Tan Syed Hamid Albar.

During the meeting, Tan Syed Hamid bin Albar praised Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina for providing shelter to the large number of persecuted Rohingyas. Pointing out that the Prime Minister has given them shelter in Bangladesh considering the humanitarian aspects, in the end he said that the Rohingyas must return to their own land.

At this time, the former minister also raised a questioned telling why the Rohingya repatriation process was stopped despite both countries agreement.

“The Myanmar government is willing to take back the Rohingyas. Even Rohingyas sheltered in Bangladesh are eager to return to their native land and Bangladesh government has also continued all efforts to send them back. Now the question is why the Rohingya repatriation process is stopped even though all parties agree? Why is the Rohingya crisis not being resolved? The reason for these needs to be investigated,” said Momen.

Meanwhile, both sides have agreed in principle to form a parliamentary friendship forum between the parliament members of Malaysia and Bangladesh. Both countries will work on how to implement it.
