13 Bangladeshi teens return home after serving jail terms in India 13 Bangladeshi teenagers have return home after serving two years in India on Tuesday, July 9, 2024.

A total of 13 Bangladeshi teens returned home on Tuesday, after serving a two-year jail sentence in India.

They arrived at the Benapole Checkpost with a special travel authorization.

The Indian Petrapole Immigration Police returned them to the Benapole Checkpoint Immigration Police.

They are from Satkhira, Jessore, Pirojpur, Patuakhali, Munshiganj, Comilla, and Gopalganj.

Azharul Islam, officer-in-charge (OC) of Benapole Checkpost Immigration Police, said the teens were enticed by brokers promising decent opportunities and unlawfully crossed several border crossings into India two years ago.

They were eventually captured by Indian authorities while working in Indian homes and imprisoned for illegal entrance.

He said that after serving their sentences, two Indian NGOs, Dhruvashram and Sukanya, arranged their release and placement in shelter homes.

He said that after completing immigration requirements, they returned home on Tuesday afternoon using special travel permission granted by the Indian government.

The returnees were turned up at the Benapole Port Police Station.

OC Azharul Islam stated that the human rights NGO Justice and Care will then take care of them and assist in reuniting with their families.

Muhit Hossain, senior program officer of Justice and Care in Jessore, said that the returnees will be temporarily sheltered in the organization's shelter home before they are handed over to their families.
