Interim Government's Adviser on Information and Broadcasting Nahid Islam today (Aug 17) said that justice will be served in the murder case of journalist couple Sagar Sarowar and Meherun Runi.

For this, he urged for a fresh investigation into the case, where the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting will offer full support.

He announced during a media briefing held at the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting’s office in the Secretariat this morning.

The session began with a moment of silence to honour the journalists and other martyrs of the recent public uprising.

Expressing concern over the previous handling of the Sagar-Runi case, he said that it had been treated as a farce. "This is a matter that the ministry will seriously address.”

The adviser urged the media to assist in uncovering the truth about the atrocities committed during the student-led uprising, calling for unbiased reporting that serves the public.

"There should be no partisanship in the media. Journalism must be practised independently and neutrally for the benefit of the people," he added.

He also mentioned the need to reassess any repressive laws that hinder freedom of expression in the media.

Nahid Islam revealed plans to establish an Independent Media Commission under the interim government to ensure free and fair media.

"We will engage with stakeholders to discuss this initiative. If there are issues with laws affecting media professionals, we will consider reforms, including the reconstitution of the Censor Board," he said.

The adviser called on the media to help expose the true extent of the atrocities committed during the uprising by supporting ongoing investigations.
