India must warn before water release from common rivers: Advisor

A message will be sent to India regarding advance warning before releasing water from common rivers of the two countries, said Forest and Environment Adviser Syeda Rizwana Hasan today (August 23).

She, at the same time has called upon India to comply with the international river law, upholding a collaborative mentality to its neighboring country.

Rizwana Hasan, also water resources adviser of the interim government, made the remark while talking to reporters after inspecting the embankments of Khowai in Habiganj.

The advisor reminded international river law saying, “Even if there is no agreement with the neighboring country, no one can harm anyone; one country will help another country.”

“Before releasing water from the upstream country, the downstream country is supposed to be informed. Then people can be relocated. But this time it was not followed. Taking lessons from this situation, Bangladesh's message will reach India that Bangladesh should be given early warning if water is released from all the common rivers,” she said.

The chief adviser of the interim government Mohammad Yunus raised this issue in the meeting with High Commission of India with,' she added.
