The interim government has condemned the assault on Gono Odhikar Parishad president and former DUCSU vice president Nurul Haque Nur, pledging that the incident will be formally investigated, said Shafiqul Alam, press secretary to the chief adviser of the interim government.
Speaking to reporters at Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) late Friday night (August 29) after visiting Nur, who remains under treatment, he described the attack as “highly deplorable.”
Shafiqul Alam said doctors had confirmed that Nur sustained injuries near his nose and eyes, was experiencing internal bleeding, and was semi-conscious. Physicians were preparing to move him to the intensive care unit for further monitoring and additional tests.
He said the government would not let the matter pass without scrutiny. “We condemn this attack on Nur. The entire incident will be investigated,” he stressed.
The press secretary also praised Nur’s past role in national politics, recalling his leadership during the 2018 anti-quota movement and his participation in the 2024 mass uprising.
He said that Nur had previously endured arrest and torture, including on July 19, and said Friday’s assault was part of a disturbing pattern that warranted serious attention.
Violence erupted Friday evening outside the Jatiya Party headquarters in Kakrail when supporters of the Jatiya Party and Gono Odhikar Parishad clashed.
Later, law enforcement intervened, using force to disperse the crowds. Nur, along with several others, was seriously injured and remains in critical care.
