MUNSHIGANJ: A policeman was killed and three sustained bullet injuries in a gunfight with robbers on the Meghna River under Gozaria upazila of the district on Wednesday morning.

The dead cop was identified as Md Malek, a police constable.

Bullet-hit sub-inspector Prodip Kumar, constables MD Shamim and MD Ibrahim were sent to Dhaka Medical College Hospital for treatment of bullet injuries.

Gozaria thana Officer-in-Charge Mamunur Rashid told banglanews, “Patrol police instructed a trawler loaded with iron rods to halt at 3:30am. Instead of complying, the robbers opened fire on policemen".

The police fired in self-defence. During the gunfight, three cops sustained bullet injuries and one went missing. Divers recovered his body at 10:00am.

At one stage, robbers fled the scene leaving the trawler. Police recovered some locally made weapons including three choppers from the vessel.

Bhoberchar health complex doctor Asad Kabir told bangla news, “WE have shifted the injured cops to DMCH as their condition is critical.”

Police superintendent Md Habibur Rahman later visited the spot.
