Court places three associates of Saifuzzaman on 10-day remand

A Dhaka court today placed three associates of former land minister Saifuzzaman Chowdhury on a 10-day remand each in two corruption cases filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC).

The accused — Md Abdul Aziz, Mohammad Jahangir Alam, and Utpal Paul — all assistant general managers (AGMs) of Aramit PLC, were produced before Dhaka Metropolitan Senior Special Judge Md Sabbir Faiz, who granted five days’ remand in each case after hearing.

According to case documents, Saifuzzaman allegedly embezzled money from several banks and financial institutions through the three accused and laundered it abroad.

One case, filed by ACC Deputy Assistant Director (DAD) Md Rubel Hossain, accuses eight individuals of embezzling Tk 41.75 crore from the Mohakhali branch of United Commercial Bank (UCB) PLC.

Another case, filed by ACC DAD Md Sajib Ahmed, alleges that Tk 60 crore in bribes was taken from UCB’s Foreign Exchange Branch.
