BAGERHAT: Mongla Port Municipality mayor and BNP leader Molla Abdul Jalil has been suspended following the submission of charge sheets in three graft cases filed against him by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC).

Local Government Ministry in a circular Monday issued the suspension order and assigned municipal councilor Shafiqur Rahman to the duties as acting mayor.

The anti-graft watchdog, which conducted massive anti-corruption drives under the emergency rule after the 1/11 changeover in 2007, filed five corruption cases against the mayor and a number of councilors in 2008. Charge sheets of three of the cases have already been submitted against him.

A Local Government source said the suspension “will be effective from July 1”, the source said.

Molla Abdul Jalil was elected mayor of Mongla port municipality on May 5, 2004.
