Writ filed seeking judicial commission to probe Sohag murder

A writ petition has been filed with the High Court seeking the formation of a high-powered judicial commission to investigate the brutal killing of scrap trader Lal Chand alias Md Sohag, who was beaten to death with a stone in front of Mitford Hospital in Old Dhaka.

The petition was submitted by Supreme Court lawyer Yunus Ali Akand in the relevant branch of the High Court.

The plea also calls for directives to arrest those directly involved in the murder.

A High Court bench comprising Justice Qazi Zeenat Haque and Justice Ainun Nahar Siddiqa is expected to hear the writ on Monday (July 14).

Meanwhile, in connection with the murder, Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Hasib Ullah Gias on Saturday (July 12) granted a five-day police remand for accused Titon Gazi.

The remand was sought by Inspector Nasir Uddin of Kotwali Police Station, the investigation officer in the case, who had applied for a seven-day remand.

In a separate development, another accused, Tarique Rahman Robin, gave a confessional statement in court in a case filed under the Arms Act.

Following a two-day remand, Sub-Inspector Md Monir, the investigating officer in the arms case, applied to record Robin’s statement.

The court recorded his confession under Section 164 of the Criminal Procedure Code and later sent him to jail.

Earlier, on July 10, the court granted a five-day remand for another accused, Mahmudul Hasan Mohin, in the murder case, and a two-day remand for Robin in the arms case.

According to police, the incident occurred on the evening of July 9, when a group of individuals attacked Sohag, a 39-year-old scrap dealer, and fatally struck him on the head with a stone on the paved road in front of Gate No. 3 of Sir Salimullah Medical College and Hospital.

Following the incident, Sohag’s elder sister filed a murder case with Kotwali Police Station.

In addition to the murder case, police have also filed a separate case under the Arms Act in connection with the recovery of illegal weapons.
