No one will be allowed to take advantage of the rise of extremism in Bangladesh, Information and Broadcasting Adviser Mahfuz Alam said in response to a report published in the New York Times fearing the rise of religious extremism in Bangladesh.
He said: “According to the report, an opportunity for extremism has emerged in Bangladesh. We will try to prevent any political and religious extremism from rising in Bangladesh.”
Alam said this to the reporters today (April 2) after visiting the grave of martyr Masum Miah and meeting his family in Uttar Rampur village, Cumilla.
He emphasized the government's commitment to preventing both political and religious extremism. “If dialogue and preventive measures are not enough, and there is an attempt to destabilize the country, the government will take a firm stance,” he added.
Alam urged the people of Bangladesh to uphold the spirit of the nation’s martyrs and reaffirmed the government's dedication to fulfilling their aspirations.
“We are working to build the Bangladesh envisioned by those who sacrificed their lives. If all political parties join with sincerity, we can create a new Bangladesh,” he said.
Addressing media reforms, Alam stressed the importance of improving the sector. “We seek qualitative reforms in the media. The Media Reform Commission has provided detailed recommendations, including district and regional-level proposals,” he added.
Among those present at the event were Police Superintendent Mohammad Nazir Ahmed Khan, National Citizen Party (NCP) Central Joint Member Secretary Joynal Abedin Shishir, Sadar Dakshin Upazila Nirbahi Officer Rubaiya Khanam, and leaders of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement.
