AL’s heinous act in Gopalganj will not go unpunished: Interim Govt

The interim government has strongly condemned the attack on leaders and supporters of the National Citizen Party (NCP) during their rally in Gopalganj, calling it a shameful violation of young citizens’ fundamental rights.

An official statement was issued in this regard Wednesday (July 16) afternoon.

According to statement, the violence was allegedly carried out by members of the banned Chhatra League and Awami League, was unacceptable under any circumstances. The rally was part of the NCP’s ongoing July March campaign, marking the anniversary of what they call a revolutionary youth movement that began a year ago.

“The attempt to block a peaceful gathering of young citizens is a disgraceful breach of basic democratic rights,” the statement read.

It added that not only NCP members but also police personnel and journalists came under attack. Vehicles were vandalised, and several people were physically assaulted during the incidents.

The interim government stressed that the perpetrators must be swiftly identified and held fully accountable. “There is no place in Bangladesh for such violence against any citizen,” the statement said.

Authorities also praised the prompt intervention of police and military forces during the unrest and expressed gratitude to the students and civilians who continued the rally in the face of threats and intimidation.

The statement concluded by affirming that justice would be ensured and those responsible for the violence would not escape accountability. “There is no place for violence in our country. Justice will prevail,” it said.
