Leaders and activists of the Awami League and banned Chhatra League allegedly attacked Gopalganj District Jail on Wednesday afternoon.

The incident happened around 4:00pm, when several hundred individuals reportedly began hurling bricks and stones at the jail compound without warning. 

According to witnesses the assault shattered window glass and injured multiple prison guards.

Law enforcement personnel arrived on the scene shortly after the attack began. Members of a joint security force took control of the area, prompting the attackers to flee.

Officials confirmed that no inmates escaped during the incident.

Meanwhile, reports indicated that three people were killed in related violence in Gopalganj on the same day, though the identities of only two of the deceased had been confirmed at the time of reporting.

The attack on the jail came amid widespread unrest linked to clashes around the National Citizen Party’s (NCP) rally and march in the district. Security forces continued efforts into the evening to stabilise the situation.
