Plane engine catches fire after Dhaka takeoff, 290 escape

A Turkish Airlines flight carrying 290 passengers made an emergency landing at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka after one of its engines caught fire shortly after takeoff on Tuesday (May 20) morning.

The aircraft, an Airbus A330-303 operating as flight TK713, departed for Istanbul at around 7:00 am when the pilot reported a spark in one of the two engines approximately 15 minutes into the flight.

Airport officials said the pilot acted swiftly, initiating emergency procedures and circling in the air for nearly 90 minutes to burn fuel before landing safely at 8:15 am.

“There were no casualties. The pilot made an emergency landing immediately after assessing the situation,” said Group Captain SM Ragib Samad, Executive Director of Shahjalal International Airport.

Emergency services were on standby as the plane returned, and all passengers disembarked safely. Authorities confirmed that no injuries were reported among the passengers or crew.

The airport and aviation regulatory bodies have launched an investigation into the cause of the engine fire.

Further details about the technical fault or the aircraft’s condition following the emergency landing have not yet been released.
