There is no conflict between national reform and elections, said National Consensus Commission Vice-President Professor Ali Riaz.
He made the remarks on Monday (May 26) while speaking at a briefing organised by the commission at the LD Hall of the National Parliament.
In response to a question on whether reforms should come before elections, Professor Riaz said, “There is no conflict between elections and reforms. An imaginary conflict is being created, but in reality, there is none.”
He explained that the election process is one aspect, while the effort to draft a national charter is a long-term goal aimed at shaping a political structure that prevents the return of authoritarianism and protects citizens' rights.
When asked whether the constitution should be reformed or rewritten, Professor Riaz said it is a procedural matter.
“Whether the constitution will be amended, reformed, or rewritten is a decision that politicians will make,” he added.
