DHAKA: A parliamentary panel Thursday recommended summoning the Anti-Corruption Commission to show cause of an inordinate delay in settling a case of monetary bungling by government transport contractors.

The decision came from the 31st meeting of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Public Accounts held at the Parliament Bhaban with its chairman Dr Mohiuddin Khan Alamgir in the chair.

It was informed that transport contractors caused a loss of a total amount of Tk 92, 81, 744 to government exchequer through “fake and fabulous billing”.

The watchdog body of lawmakers gave the authorities 15 days to inform them about the present status of the case filed against the accused.

The committee also asked for report on another chunk of loss of TK 20,68,800 incurred through purchase of spare parts through single tenders.

In a further step against fiscal anomalies, the meeting also discussed the audit objections on loan defaulters of different branches of the state-run Janata Bank.

It also discussed the audit reports on government and semi-government commercial institutions for 2004-2005 FY.    

Committee members Professor Md Ali Ashraf, Khan Tipu Sultan, Narayan Chandra Chanda and Mosammat Forida Akther were also present at the meeting.
