As the 13th national election nears, a scrap trader was brutally killed in Old Dhaka earlier this week.
Following the heinous incident, police and Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) have arrested four suspects in connection with the brutal killing of Lal Chand, also known as Sohag, 39.
The incident happened on Wednesday around 6:00pm near Gate No. 3 of Sir Salimullah Medical College and Mitford Hospital.
According to police, two of the arrestees—Mahmudul Hasan Mohin, 41, and Tareq Rahman Robin, 22—were named in the case filed by the victim’s family. A foreign-made pistol was recovered from Tareq Rahman during the arrest.
Later, RAB on suspicion of involvement in the crime arrested other two suspects.
The development was confirmed on Friday (July 11) evening by Deputy Commissioner Muhammad Talebur Rahman of the Media and Public Relations Division of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP).
On Wednesday, a group of attackers struck and hacked Sohag with stones and sharp weapons.
After receiving information, officers from Kotwali Police Station quickly reached the scene and brought the situation under control. The body was sent to the hospital morgue for an autopsy following the preparation of an inquest report.
Sohag’s elder sister later filed a murder case with Kotwali Police Station. Reviewing CCTV footage from the area, police identified and apprehended the named suspects.
DC Talebur Rahman said initial investigation suggests that the killing was motivated by business disputes and personal enmity.
He added that efforts were underway to trace and arrest other individuals involved in the crime.
Law enforcement agencies have intensified their operations to ensure all suspects are brought to justice.
