Members of Dhaka Police dispersed a group identifying themselves as ‘July Warriors’ from Dhaka’s Shahbagh intersection on Friday (August 1) evening.
This development has brought an end to a two-day blockade that had disrupted traffic and caused public inconvenience.
The blockade began on Thursday, when a group under the banner of ‘July Warriors’ set up a stage and occupied the key intersection.
This afternoon, a separate group claiming to also represent the ‘July Warriors’ arrived and opposed the blockade, leading to a heated argument between the two sides.
To prevent further confrontation and restore order, police intervened and removed both groups from the site. Authorities also dismantled the makeshift stage set up by the initial demonstrators.
Speaking to reporters, members of the opposing group said true ‘July Warriors’ would not cause suffering to the public by blocking roads. “Some individuals are misusing the identity of July Warriors and harassing people at Shahbagh. We strongly protest this,” one of them said.
Police said the action was taken to avoid escalation and to ensure the smooth flow of traffic in the busy area.
