The Bangladesh Embassy in Rabat, the capital of Morocco, has officially launched e-passport services, marking it as the 64th foreign mission to offer the upgraded system.

The initiative is expected to significantly enhance the speed, security, and efficiency of consular services for Bangladeshi nationals residing in Morocco and other countries under the embassy’s jurisdiction.

Bangladesh’s Ambassador to Morocco, Sadia Faizunnesa, presided over the inauguration ceremony on Saturday (September 21). Major General Md Nurul Anwar, Director General of the Department of Immigration and Passports, was the chief guest.

Also present as special guests were Mohammad Abu Nayeem, Joint Secretary of the Ministry of Home Affairs, and Lieutenant Colonel Hammad Faisal, Deputy Director of the e-Passport Project.

In his remarks, Major General Anwar highlighted several recent initiatives taken by the Department of Immigration and Passports to address the challenges faced by Bangladeshi expatriates in accessing passport-related services. He also outlined the department’s broader efforts to improve service quality and build public trust in its operations.

A question-and-answer session followed the formal proceedings, during which members of the Bangladeshi expatriate community actively participated. Many welcomed the introduction of e-passport services, viewing it as a significant step toward modernising consular assistance.

Ambassador Faizunnesa expressed her gratitude to the Department of Immigration and Passports for its active role in implementing the service under the guidance of Bangladesh’s Principal Adviser. She underscored the importance of e-passports in delivering modern, secure, and effective services to expatriates.

Despite operating with limited staff, the embassy continues to serve not only Morocco but also Ghana, Guinea, Senegal, and Sierra Leone. The ambassador reaffirmed the embassy’s commitment to strengthening bilateral relations, safeguarding the welfare of expatriates, and maintaining efficient consular operations.

She acknowledged the logistical and administrative challenges—ranging from vast geographical distances within Morocco to issues involving undocumented migrants—but stressed that the embassy would persist in its efforts to deliver critical services and resolve problems faced by the Bangladeshi community.
