Two workers who sustained critical burns in a gas cylinder explosion at a warehouse in the border area between Chandanaish and Satkania upazilas have died while undergoing treatment at the National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery in Dhaka, family members confirmed Saturday night
The deceased were identified as Md Idris, 26, from Chhaiyadabad in Chandanaish, and Md Yusuf, 30, from Cox's Bazar.
Md Abu Talha, brother of Idris, said that four of the most severely injured victims had been transferred from Chattogram Medical College Hospital (CMCH) to the Dhaka burn institute for advanced treatment. Two of them later succumbed to their injuries.
The explosion occurred on the morning of September 17 at a gas cylinder storage facility in the Charpara area.
Eight other individuals were severely burned in the blast. They have been identified as Mahbubur Rahman, 45; Md Sourav Rahman, 25; Mohammad Kofil, 22; Mohammad Riaz, 17; Mohammad Akib, 17; Md Harun, 29; Mohammad Liton, 28; and Mohammad Saleh, 33.
Dr Mohammad Khaled, a physician at the Burn and Plastic Surgery Unit of CMCH, told local media that six of the burn victims are still under treatment. He added that many of them suffered damage to their airways and have burns covering between 40 to 70 percent of their bodies.
Authorities have yet to confirm the cause of the explosion, which has raised concerns about safety protocols at gas storage facilities in the region.
