A 36-year-old lawyer in southern Bangladesh took his own life after reportedly leaving a handwritten note citing severe physical illness and psychological distress, according to local police.
The deceased, Shamim Hossain Joy, was found dead at his rented residence in the Chandkathi area of Jhalakathi town around 10pm on Saturday (Sept 20), officials confirmed.
Joy was a member of the Jhalakathi Bar Association and originally from South Dudharhia village in Nalchity upazila’s Dapdapia Union.
Jhalakathi Sadar Police Station Officer-in-Charge Moniruzzaman said the police recovered the body and found a note at the scene. “An investigation is underway, and we are examining all aspects of the incident,” he told reporters.
In the note, Joy reportedly wrote that he had been suffering from an incurable disease and was unable to cope with the physical and mental agony.
The note reads: “I can no longer bear the pain or the pressure. “I have chosen to end my life after much thought. No one is responsible for my death. I understand my mistakes and I am remorseful. Please do not misunderstand me, and if you can, forgive me.”
Authorities have not disclosed further details about the specific illness mentioned in the note.
