Feb polls to be a milestone in nation’s democratic history: Shafiqul

Chief Adviser’s Press Secretary Shafiqul Alam has expressed optimism that the upcoming national election, scheduled for February next year, will mark a milestone in Bangladesh’s democratic history.

“There is no pressure on the government regarding the February polls. All parties have reached a consensus on the elections. The most beautiful election in the nation’s history will be held,” he told journalists after visiting the July Memorial at Nabhanga Park in Magura on Friday.

Alam said the July Memorial, built to honor the martyrs of the July Mass Uprising of 2024, will be formally inaugurated in the presence of the advisers.

Speaking about the referendum, the press secretary mentioned that the National Consensus Commission has decided it may take place either before or after the national election. “The government has not yet taken a final decision in this regard,” he added.

On the July Charter, he said all parties have reached a consensus, while some that have not yet signed it have agreed to it in principle.

Discussing amendments to the Representation of the People Order (RPO), Alam confirmed that a ‘no vote’ option will be included, allowing voters to express their opinion even if there is only one candidate in a constituency.

Regarding the participation of Awami League in the upcoming polls, Alam clarified that the party has no scope to contest in the February election.
