Dock workers call 18 hrs staggered strike at Ctg seaport

CHITTAGONG: The Dock-Port workers’ federation called 18 hours of strike staggered over six days from July 26 at Chittagong Seaport to press home their four-point demand.

The work-stoppage programme was announced through a press release of the labour coalition on Thursday evening, indicating a fresh crisis in the country’s commercial lifeline.

As per announcement, the work-off protest will be staged from 8am to 10am on 26, 27 and 29 July and from 8am to 12pm on 1-3 August.

Besides, they will stage sit-in and rally at the gate of port building.

The four-point demands: reinstatement of the selected workers-staff members from among those suspended during emergency rule, appointment of workers in phases, reintroducing the welfare system for workers-staffers through labour department and opening the closed dormitory.

Federation president Golam Mohammad Chawdhury told banglanews24.com.bd the government had not taken “any effective initiative yet though they assured accepting our demands”.

According to the press release, “A tougher programme will be declared through special general meeting on 4 August after observing the scheduled programme.”
