Dhaka: Students of some departments of Jagannath University Thursday boycotted their classes and joined a demonstration demanding the scrapping of a predatory provision of the varsity law.

At one stage of the protest procession, the mass students also joined in the demo, all calling for abrogating Section 27(4) of the Jagannath University Act 2005.

After the procession, the agitated students gathered in front of the campus monument and burned an effigy of former education minister of the BNP government Dr. Osman Faruq.

As per provision of Section 27(4) of the JU Act, the university is to run with its own finance. Accordingly, the present government authority is cutting down the government funds. Recently the university authorities announced an increase in tuition fees to raise the varsity’s own income to pay its way.
