CHITTAGONG: State Minister for Home Affairs Advocate Shamsul Haque Tuku Wednesday said the “illegal military rulers” introduced communal politics in the country after the assassination of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman to serve their perverse purpose.

“They (the military rulers) created divisions and rivalries among people having faith in different religions for establishing themselves as the rulers of the country,” he said while inaugurating a merry march marking Janmashtami here Wednesday.

Calling upon all to face unitedly those who want to keep up the politics of communal conflicts, the state minister said the government wants to stop this kind of politics forever.
 
“We’re working to establish such a Bangladesh where no strife in practicing religious rites will exist, where human beings will be served through religion,” he added.

Awami League leader Sujit Roy Nandi, Aminul Islam Amin and CMP Commissioner Abul Kashem also spoke at the programme, chaired by Procession Celebration Council president Debashish Palit.

Shamsul Haque Tuku inaugurated the carnival at 11 am releasing balloons and pigeons from a stage on a truck at Andarkilla intersection in the port city.

Hundreds of Hindu devotees from different places of Chittagong joined the traditional street celebrations and paraded the main city thoroughfares.

Besides, a three-day programme has been arranged on the premises of JM Sen Hall of the city to celebrate Janmashtami.
