Compensation for death of UN peacekeepers raised to $70,000s

DHAKA: Compensation package for death of UN peacekeepers has been raised 40 percent to around 70,000 US dollars or Tk 50 lakh per head, said an official announcement here Thursday.   

A resolution to this effect was adopted unanimously at a meeting of the administrative and 5th budgetary committee of the UN General Assembly on June 15.

Members of the committee agreed to increase the compensation from 50,000 to 70,000 US dollars.

A total of 98 UN peacekeepers from Bangladesh have died on duty in several missions, according to the government handout.

About 10,500 members of Bangladesh security forces have been working now in 12 UN peacekeeping missions in different troubled pockets of the world.
