53 including Sheikh Hasina, family face arrest warrants

A Dhaka court has issued arrest warrants against 53 people, including former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, her sister Sheikh Rehana, and other family members, in connection with a corruption case over plot allocations by the Capital Development Authority (RAJUK).

The warrants were issued after reviewing the charge sheets in three separate cases filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) on Sunday (April 13).

Senior Special Judge Zakir Hossain Galib, issued the warrants due to the accused being fugitives.

The accused also include Sheikh Rehana’s daughter, former British MP Tulip Rizwana Siddiq, her son Radwan Mujib Siddiq, and another daughter Azmina Siddiq.

The case alleges that the accused used their influence to secure plots illegally. Tulip Siddiq has been linked to the misappropriation of €3.9 billion from the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant project.

Earlier, on Thursday, the court also issued arrest warrants for Sheikh Hasina, her daughter Saima Wazed Putul, and 16 others in another plot corruption case.

The British media, including Daily Mail, reported that Tulip Siddiq could be considered a fugitive in foreign cases, potentially leading to a request from Bangladesh for her extradition.

The allegations against her include leveraging influence to secure plots for her family members and involvement in the Rooppur nuclear plant scam. Reports also suggest that she lived in an apartment provided by close associates of Sheikh Hasina in London, which led to her resignation from her ministerial post.
