Bangladesh, Philippines share practices

DHAKA: The Mayor of the Philippines’ Central Business District (CBD) welcomed last week a group of high-level delegates from Bangladesh, to share the city’s best practices and lessons learned on Disaster Risk Reduction and Management (DRRM).

The delegation comprises of senior officials of the Ministry of Disaster Management & Relief of Bangladesh.

In an official statement, Makati City Mayor Jejomar Erwin S Binay said that Makati recognises the sharing strategy as one of the best tools in the transfer of knowledge and practices among local governments.

Officials from the city government presented Makati’s DRRM system that includes its legal and institutional basis, organisational structure the four thematic areas in DRRM (e.g. prevention and mitigation, preparedness, response, and recovery and rehabilitation) and ongoing projects and activities, and its awards and recognitions, among others.

In particular, the Mayor said the delegates were particularly interested in the city’s cash for work programme, disaster resilient infrastructure, and the GIS and hazard maps of Makati. They also visited the Makati Command Control and Communication (C3) Center to learn how Makati is using today’s advanced technology to monitor and ease traffic congestion and improve public safety.

“Makati has learned much from local governments not only in the country but also from among our Asian neighbours and other countries abroad during study visits and international fora,” he said.

“We are glad that Makati has been able to provide inputs to other local governments in their efforts to develop disaster resilient communities by sharing our projects, activities and processes that can serve as their benchmark,” the mayor added.
