Rampal won’t affect environment

DHAKA: The government has claimed that the much-talked-about 1300-MW Rampal Coal-Fired Power Plant would not affect the Sundarbans as well as the environment.

The assertion came from a press note on Thursday.

The news release said Rampal power plant is modern technology based and it would be run by super critical technology and imported standard coal.

Carbon, sulfur and others air polluting elements would be kept in reasonable level in the project, it added.

On Wednesday, Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Ministry Adviser to Prime Minister Dr Toufiq-e-Elahi said the foundation stone of the 1300-MW power plant would be laid on October 22.

In the meantime, environment activists and social workers raised their voice against the power plant and hundreds of them have started a long march to Rampal to save the Sundarbans.
