Polytechnic students go berserk

DHAKA: Thousands of the students of Polytechnic Institutes across the country burst into protest in Rajshahi, Chittagong, Jessore, Faridpur, Rangpur and Bogra including the capital to press home their two points demand.

In capital, the students of Dhaka Polytechnic Institute, on the second day of their agitation, locked into a clash in city’s Tejgaon Industrial area on Sunday morning to press home their 2-point demands.

Witnesses said agitating students started the demonstration at around 11.15am at the campus and a large number of police men took position on the street adjacent to the institute.

Later, without any provocation, students started throwing brick chips aiming police which triggered a clash in the area.

In Dhanmondi, more than hundred private cars and other vehicles were vandalized in a clash with police and students at Dhanmandi-27 of the city on Sunday noon.

Witnesses said polytechnic institute students started the demonstration and tried to blockade roads at 12.30pm.

Meanwhile, police obstructed the students that triggered the clash.

In Mirpur, students of Islami Bank Institute of Technology took position on the road of Mirpur-10 at around 10:15am that halted traffic movement in the area for an hour.

In Chittagong, the agitated students of Chittagong Polytechnic Institute staged protest demo by blocking roads at the Sholoshohor road in the port city.

The vehicles movement remained halted the area that caused immense sufferings to city dwellers.

Additional police force was deployed in the area to avoid any untoward situation.

Chittagong Additional Deputy Commissioner M Shahidullah confirmed the matter to banglanews.

In Jessore, the students of Jessore Polytechnic showed their protest to press home the two points demand.

The agitated students blocked the road and locked into a clash with transport workers in the area, leaving 10 people injured including a photo journalist.  

On information, police rushed to the spot to keep the situation under control.

Kotwali police station Officer-in-Charge Emdadul Haque confirmed the matter to banglanews.

In Bogra, the students of Bogra Polytechnic institute also showed their protest by boycotting the examination and took out a procession in town’s Nishindara area.

Additional Police Super (Head Quarter) Gaziur Rahman said that they are trying to keep the situation under their control.

In Rangpur, at least 30 people were injured in a clash with polytechnic Institute students and businessmen in Payra Chattar area near Grand Hotel intersection of the town on Sunday morning.

Critically injured three were sent to Rangpur Medical College Hospital.

Witnesses said Rangpur Polytechnic Institute students brought out a procession at around 11:30am. During the time, they attacked adjacent shops, bank and insurance and vandalized 50 vehicles.

FROM PATUAKHALI: At least 50 people including police, journalists and students were injured in a clash between police and students at the premises of Patuakhali Polytechnic Institute.

The agitated students vandalized around 30 vehicles in the area.

Police opened fire to bring the situation under control.

However the injured were rushed to Patuakhali Hospital and local clinics.

Sadar police station Officer-in-Charge Monirul Islam confirmed the matter to banglanews.

The two points demand are implementation of Prime Minister’s directives in reduction of salary discrimination of diploma engineers and two inter-ministry committee’s recommendation.
