DHAKA: A writ petition was filed with the High Court seeking stay order on the construction of Rampal Power plant on Sunday.
Lawyer of four petitioners Advocate Monzil Morshed confirmed it to banglanews.
Later he told journalists that the hearing is to be held in the HC bench of Justice Naima Haider and Justice Jafar Ahmed on Monday.
The petitioners also sought a rule upon the concerned authorities to form a committee comprising national and international experts to evaluate the environmental impact of the proposed power plant.
In the writ, the court order was sought to stay the construction of the plant until report submitted by the committee on the environmental impact of the project.
The four petitioners are Advocate Asaduzzaman Siddiqui, Md Aklas Uddin Bhuiyan, Mahbubul Islam and Sayeda Shaheen Ara Laily.
Secretary of Prime Minister’s office, Cabinet Secretary, Planning secretary, environment secretary, Power and Energy secretary, Shipping Secretary, Environment Department director general, Bangladesh Power Development Board, Bagerhat Deputy Commissioner and Rampal Power Plant project director were made defendants in the petition.
The foundation stone of the 1300-MW power plant is set be laid on October 22.
In the meantime, environment activists and social workers raised their voice against the power plant and hundreds of them staged a long march from Dhaka to Rampal to save the Sundarbans.
