BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir and standing committee member Mirza Abbas were freed from jail this evening.
They walked out of jail at 5:50 pm after the bail order reached Dhaka Central Jail, Keraniganj, said jailor Mahabubul Islam.
"We got the bail order and we are taking steps to release them," Subhash Kumar Ghosh, senior super of the jail, earlier told media.
Justice Jahangir Hossain passed the order today (Jan 4) following a petition from the government.
Earlier, the state filed a petition with the Supreme Court challenging the High Court's bail order for Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir and Mirza Abbas in a case involving the clash on occurred on December 7, 2022.
On January 3, the High Court granted six-month bail to Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir and Mirza Abbas in this case.
In the same case, Mirza Fakhrul and Mirza Abbas have earlier been denied bail four times by the lower courts.
On December 9, 2022, Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Mohammad Jashim sent Mirza Fakhrul Alamgir and Mirza Abbas to jail in the case, rejecting their bail petitions.
The case was filed with Paltan Model Police Station on Dec 8, following the December 7 clash between BNP men and police in front of the party's Nayapaltan central office.
On December 9, Dhaka Metropolitan Police's Detective Branch (DB) picked up Mirza Fakhrul Alamgir and Mirza Abbas.
