Chittagong: Mayor ABM Mohiuddin Chowdhury will step down tomorrow (Thursday) at 10am to submit his nomination to stand in the forthcoming election for a fourth consecutive term as the candidate of Nagorik Committee.

The mayor declared his decision Wednesday at a programme in the CCC conference room, a day before the last date for submission of nominations for the June 17 polls.

He said, “It depends solely on public will whether I will return as CCC mayor once again, or not.”

Mohiuddin stated that he is a staunch follower of democracy and bears firm trust on people’s verdict.

“Notwithstanding what may be my future position, I would continue my mission for building a violence-free and secular society in the port city,” the mayor asserted.

“My resignation is belated just for Local Government and Engineering Department’s (LGED) directives, as to who will act as mayor after my submission. I sent a letter to the relevant office asking the direction on this issue, and hopefully it might reach soon,” he told his audience.

Mohiuddin, a veteran Awami League leader, has been elected CCC mayor for consecutive three tenures from such citizens’ platform.
