Hartal marked in Ctg amid violence

CHITTAGONG: The dawn-to-dusk hartal, called by Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami, observed in the port city and upazilas of the district on Sunday amid tight security.

The organization observed the shutdown in protest against killing of its activists of Mirsarai upazila.

Our correspondents report that the general strike also caused immense sufferings to thousands of commuters as vehicles, including buses and other vehicles, went off the roads.

Workers of various level including garments, private institutions crowded several points of the city to get a transport. They were seen waiting at the points for hours to get chance to board a vehicle and chaos erupted when a bus or other vehicle arrived.
Ongoing Primary School Certificate (PSC) and equivalent examinations 2013 will remain out of purview of hartal, said City Jamaat publicity secretary Mohammad Ullah.

Metropolitan Additional Deputy Commissioner (North) Shahidullah told banglanews, “Additional police forces had deployed in Jamaat-Shibir influenced area.”

Police sources said that additional four thousands police men had deployed in various spots of the city and its outside.

Earlier on Friday midnight, miscreants chopped an activist of Jamaat-e-Islami to death in Shayerkhali Somity Bazar area under Mirsarai Upazila.
