BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has said the party is not participating in the upcoming five city elections.
He also said that in the city polls, there will be no representation from the party for mayoral and councillor posts.
"We will not join any local government elections," he added.
Fakhrul was talking to reporters after placing a wreath at the grave of BNP founder Ziaur Rahman along with leaders of the newly formed Jatiyatabadi Swechchasebak Dal committee today (April 29).
He alleged that the Awami League made the national election in 2014 a complete farce by depriving people of their right to franchise.
Similarly, in 2018, they usurped power by stuffing ballots the night before the election and people did not participate in that polls either, said BNP Secretary General.
Earlier on April 3, the Election Commission (EC) announced the schedules for Gazipur, Rajshahi, Sylhet, Barisal and Khulna city corporation election.
As per the schedules, the Gazipur City Corporation election will be held on May 25 while Khulna and Barishal on June 12, and Sylhet and Rajshahi on June 21.
