Two brothers have died following clashes between rival groups of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) in Fatehpur, Nachole upazila of Chapainawabganj, amid a feud over local dominance, family members and police said.
The victims—Milon, 60, and his younger brother Alam, 55—were supporters of Abdus Salam Tuhin, an aspiring BNP nominee for the Chapainawabganj-2 constituency.
Both men succumbed to their injuries at Rajshahi Medical College Hospital on Wednesday evening and late at night (October 15), their sister Tanjila Begum confirmed.
Tensions had reportedly been simmering for days between activists aligned with Abdus Salam Tuhin and those backing former lawmaker Aminul Islam.
Local sources said supporters of Tuhin allegedly assaulted three men—Tariqul, Kamrul and Shafiqul—several days earlier.
In retaliation, followers of Aminul Islam mounted a counter-attack on Tuesday morning, leaving at least 14 people seriously injured.
Police intervened at the scene, restoring order and sending the wounded to hospital; eight were referred to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital, where Milon and Alam later died.
Nachole Police Station officer-in-charge Md Monirul Islam said officers swiftly took control and increased patrols in the area. He added that no case had been filed as of Thursday (October 16), but police would lodge one as a complainant if necessary.
BNP figures in the area disputed characterisations of the incident as a political clash, insisting it stemmed from a local dispute.
Former MP Aminul Islam and Nachole BNP general secretary Abu Taher both said that the confrontation was rooted in “village politics,” despite activists from both BNP camps being involved.
