BNP Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi today expressed deep concern over the recent series of fire incidents across Bangladesh, describing them as a growing national anxiety.

“The nation is anxious over such repeated fires across the country,” Rizvi told reporters at the BNP central office in Naya Paltan.

He alleged that a “certain group” is attempting to destabilize the country with backing from India. “How are so many major fires breaking out at once? Are these mere bureaucratic failures or part of a deliberate conspiracy?” he questioned, referring to reports that fire service vehicles faced obstacles during the airport fire response.

Rizvi further claimed, “India has consistently backed these destabilizing efforts—directly or indirectly. It has always supported illegitimate governments like Sheikh Hasina’s and never wanted a stable, democratic Bangladesh.”

Citing the 2014 election, he said, “No major political party participated, yet Indian diplomats pressured Ershad to join—that was direct interference in our sovereignty.”

The BNP leader also warned that the ongoing instability might be linked to attempts to influence the upcoming national election, expected by February. “Are these fires just accidents, or part of a broader plan to derail the election process?” he asked.

Rizvi said that BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia’s security is being strengthened, including the purchase of a bulletproof vehicle. “If her health permits, she will participate in the campaign,” he said.

Calling for unity among democratic forces, Rizvi urged all “anti-fascist parties” to uphold the July Charter as the nation’s “Magna Carta” and work together to restore democracy.

BNP Joint Secretary General Khairul Kabir Khokon and Swechchhasebak Dal Secretary Mir Sarafat Ali Sopu were present at the briefing.
