The nomination paper of Mohammad Zahangir Alam, suspended mayor of Gazipur City Corporation, has been rejected while his mother Zayeda Khatun's one was declared valid for the mayoral post.

Md Faridul Islam, the returning officer for the election, today (April 30) informed the matter of cancellation the nomination on the grounds of Jahangir's being a loan defaulter.

Earlier on April 27, Zahangir submitted his nomination papers to run for mayor as an independent.

Besides, he also submitted nomination papers for his mother, who too would be running for mayor.

Earlier on April 3, the Election Commission (EC) announced the schedules for Gazipur, Rajshahi, Sylhet, Barisal and Khulna city corporation election.

As per the schedules, the Gazipur City Corporation election will be held on May 25 while Khulna and Barishal on June 12, and Sylhet and Rajshahi on June 21.
