The High Court on Monday (May 29) granted anticipatory bail to Dhaka District BNP General Secretary Nipun Roy Chowdhury for three months in a case filed in connection with an Awami League-BNP clash in Keraniganj on May 26.
The HC bench of Justice Md Habibul Gani and Justice Ahmed Sohel passed the order following a petition filed by Nipun Roy seeking bail in the case.
Senior lawyer Nitai Roy Chowdhury, Barrister Debashish Roy Chowdhury and Mithun Roy Chowdhury were in the court on behalf of the petitioner while Deputy Attorney General Amit Talukdar represented the state.
Earlier today, Nipun Roy, on a wheelchair and with part of her head bandaged, appeared before the HC bench for bail.
The accused BNP leader, who has been admitted in a private hospital, went to the HC by an ambulance in the morning.
Earlier, Nipun Roy and several leaders and activists were injured in an attack on Friday (May 26) morning during a public gathering at Zinjira in South Keraniganj of the capital.
BNP alleged that the ruling Awami League party leaders started throwing brickbats at the rally.
Ruhul Kabir Rizvi, the Senior Joint Secretary General of the BNP, was present as a chief guest at the rally.
Earlier on May 13, BNP announced the phases of programmes across the country from May 19 to press home their 10 point-demand, including the formation of a caretaker government and the release of party leaders and activists.
As part of the ongoing anti-government movement, BNP was holding public gatherings in 18 districts and metropolitan areas of nine divisions of the country on that day.
