BNP leader Chand sent to jail after remand

A Dhaka court today (June 9) sent BNP Rajshahi district unit convenor Abu Sayeed Chand to jail after remand in a case filed on charges of issuing a ‘death threat’ to prime minister Sheikh Hasina at a public rally.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Arafatul Rakib passed the order as police produced Chand before the court after end of his two-day remand in the case lodged with the capital's Chawkbazar Police Station.

The court of Dhaka Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Hasibul Haque on June 7 had placed Chand on two-day remand in the case.

Chhatra League leader named Ashikur Rahman Anu filed this case in the capital's Chawkbazar Police Station on May 25.

Earlier on 19 May, Abu Sayeed Chand reportedly made the threat at a rally organised by the BNP Rajshahi district and city units to demonstrate against harassment and arrests of the opposition activists in various fictitious cases and government corruption.

Later, several cases were filed against Abu Sayeed Chand under the Anti-Terrorism Act for his alleged death threat to Sheikh Hasina.
